The third edition of the event dedicated to the Rosso di Montalcino denomination celebrates the start of the summer season and marks its 40th anniversary with a grand party at the medieval fortress of the renowned Tuscan village.
The summer festivities of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino take on a vibrant, pop flair with the latest edition of Red Montalcino, beginning with “Red Evolution: Origins and Future of Rosso di Montalcino.” The talk show, moderated by Rainews24 editor-in-chief Barbara Di Fresco, featured some of the key figures of the denomination.
Rosso di Montalcino: Past, Present, and Future
Time flies in the company of Enzo Tiezzi, Andrea Costanti, and Francesco Ripaccioli, who recount the first forty years of the denomination. The story unfolds smoothly and delightfully in the glass, needing no words as it eloquently speaks through each sip. The event featured eight progressive tastings, starting with an incredible Poggio Antico 1993, noted for its vitality and freshness, with also a majestic Poggio di Sotto 2009, a surprising Uccelliera 2014, and a superlative Sesti 2016. These wines unequivocally showed that Rosso di Montalcino has always been a versatile and contemporary wine, with its evolution over time enhancing its youthful and casual essence.

Born in the shadow of its illustrious sibling, Rosso di Montalcino should not be viewed as a secondary DOC but rather as a complement to the long maturation period required for Brunello di Montalcino before it reaches the market. Various adjectives were used during the masterclass to describe Rosso di Montalcino: versatile, contemporary, pop, rock, dynamic. Yet, if one word had to be chosen, it would be “surprising”.

The Surprising Versatility of Sangiovese
The versatility of Sangiovese grapes allows each producer to shape Rosso di Montalcino according to their personal vision without compromising its typicality and structural integrity. The production regulations support this flexibility as it does not impose overly stringent rules on wine-making and aging methods, thus providing ample room for creative expression of each producer. The results is a diverse and rich range of offerings, making it challenging to choose a favorite among:
- Banfi Poggio alle Mura which perfectly embodies the essence of a modern, stylish, and pop wine.
- Albatreti, capturing the “unsustainable lightness of being” with all the scents of Montalcino in the glass.
- Fattoria del Pino – Il Jeccardo which follows nature’s rhythms over specifications, taking about five years to reach its full expression and celebrating joy.
- Sanlorenzo fleshy and fragrant like a rose in May.
- L’Aietta – ATIA , fermented and aged in amphora, with a rebellious personality that reveals its true outstanding character over time.
- Casanuova delle Cerbaie, with great freshness, smoothness, and a didactic nose capturing the true essence of Sangiovese..
- Cava d’Onice, lively and overwhelming, much like the personality of Katy who served each guest with a contagious smile.
- Casanova di Neri – Giovani Neri, which always charms with elegant ease and goes straight to the heart.

The Future is Tinged with Red
There are countless reasons to choose a Rosso di Montalcino, each with a specific name, face, and smile. Summarizing the appeal, however, it is a wine that is born young and remains youthful for a long time, combining superb structure with liveliness and freshness, and available at competitive prices in wine shops and restaurants.
We strongly believe in this dynamic red wave, which will continue to gain acclaim among wine enthusiasts worldwide. The Consortium shares this belief, and approved the expansion of Rosso di Montalcino vineyards. The Tuscany Region Administration recently ratified this resolution, passed by the Brunello di Montalcino Wine Consortium’s assembly last December. Existing vineyards can now claim DOC status, adding value to their produce.
The early summer party continued late into the night at the Montalcino Fortress, with excellent cocktails, street food, and DJ sets, establishing the event as a must-attend for wine lovers. If you missed it this year, there will undoubtedly be numerous opportunities to enjoy it in the future.
